DAY 2: How are Fossil Fuels Extracted?
Objective:
Lesson Outline:
Objective:
- Explain one way each fossil fuel is extracted from the Earth.
Lesson Outline:
- This link will take you to a Billy Nye video on Teachertube that describes fossil fuels, how they are used in electricity, and their impacts on the environment. This should be used as an introduction to the way we extract fossil fuels from Earth.
- The teacher will then ask to students to reflect upon what they have learned so far about fossil fuels. Who can tell me the three different fossil fuels? Who can tell me what oil is used for? Coal? Natural gas? Now, think back to the videos we have watched. A few of them mentioned very quickly how fossil fuels are collected, or extracted, from our planet. Does anyone remember how?
- The teacher will then show this video to the entire class to show them how oil and natural gas are extracted from the earth. Students will be required to write down at least five key facts from the video in their science notebooks as the video goes along.
- After the video is over, students will discuss with partners/shoulder buddies for a few minutes how oil is extracted from Earth.
- Then, students will discuss with partners/shoulder buddies for a few minutes how natural gas is extracted from Earth.
- Next, students will make predictions on how coal is extracted. Then they will see how coal is extracted via mining by watching this video.
- Lastly, students will undergo a science lab outlined here by teachcoal.org, in which students use toothpicks and chocolate chip cookies to study the cost that comes with coal mining.
