Day 3: How do Fossil Fuels Affect our Planet?
Objective:
Lesson Outline:
Objective:
- Describe one way fossil fuels affect our planet positively, as well as one way they affect our planet negatively, in a paragraph of two to five sentences.
Lesson Outline:
- The teacher will begin Day 3 by asking students to share ideas about how fossil fuels affect our planet. Do fossil fuels pollute our planet? What do they do to the air we breathe? What is plastic made from?
- After fielding student responses, the teacher will show this video, called "Plastic Planet," which demonstrates the negative impact that pollution of plastic materials has on the planet.
- Students will then be broken up into three groups, one for each of the fossil fuels. Students will not be allowed to study the same fossil fuel as they did on Day 1. Student-groups will use classroom tablets/computers to research how their respective fossil fuel impacts the planet.
- The teacher will set up a google doc for the entire class to contribute to, creating sections for each fossil fuel. Each student from every group will be responsible for typing one key fact/piece of information into the google doc concerning their group's assigned fossil fuel.
- A short presentation will be given on the primary effects of fossil fuels on the planet, including: negative effects, such as pollution, acid rain, destruction of environments, killing of animals/species, etc.; positive effects, such as electricity, ready availability, don't rely on weather, cheap, changing from fossil fuels will be very expensive, etc.
- Students will complete this word search of key vocabulary words from the day.
- After everyone has completed their word search, the teacher will perform an informal assessment on the day's content. The teacher will write a definition on the board of one of the day's vocabulary words. Students will use individual whiteboards and write down the vocabulary word they believe matches the definition on the main classroom's whiteboard. Students can use their word search sheets as references to see a list of most of the day's vocab words (the definitions are not listed on the word search, but the terms are).
- As an exit ticket, students will be given 5-10 minutes to describe in their science notebooks, using two to five sentences, one way that fossil fuels negatively impact the planet, as well as one way they positively impact the planet.
